The World Isn’t Rigged Against You

We’ve all had those mornings where you wake up, look at your bank account, your calendar, or the mountain of fires you have to put out at work, and an exhausting thought creeps in:

“Why can't I just catch a break?” “Why does everything have to be a fight?”

It feels like the world has a personal vendetta against you. The economy is bad, your boss doesn't get it, and the people around you are dropping the ball. It’s incredibly stressful, and it breeds a constant, simmering frustration that drains your energy before your feet even hit the floor. Just thinking about it can turn that upcoming vacation into a personal make-or-break moment.

Sometimes, the world does hand you a terrible hand. Life isn't always fair.

But if you are living in a constant state of frustration, waiting for the universe to suddenly align and deliver your ideal situation on a silver platter...you are going to be waiting forever.

When we blame external circumstances for where we are, we think we're just being realistic. There is, and always has been, a shortage of personal accountability in this world. They are always wrong, and we are always right. "It's not my fault" is so much easier to say than "I wonder what I could do differently?" That change in mindset requires a big reduction in ego and pride, which is why it is usually the road less traveled.

If you want to stop feeling like a casualty of circumstance, you have to drop the personal pride, and identify what's really going on.

Enter the 8 Excuse Personas

Over twenty years in leadership and consulting, I’ve seen that the highest performers don't have fewer obstacles than you. They just refuse to use those obstacles as a barrier to their progress.

When you look at your life through the lens of blame, you fall into specific behavioral traps. I call these the 8 Excuse Personas. They are the clever, rational-sounding defense mechanisms we build to protect ourselves to avoid taking 100% ownership of our outcomes.

Starting next week, we are going to dismantle one persona every single week in this newsletter. Just a straight-talking look at how these patterns show up, how they keep you trapped in that cycle of frustration, and some tactical advice to break them.

If you'd rather watch than read, I also have a dedicated video series on my YouTube channel 📺 to show you exactly what these behaviors look like in practice. Go check them out!

Check out my 3-minute videos on each Excuse Persona, and subscribe to my channel for more content.
